This Sterile Processing Externship Course is designed to provide students with an immersive experience in the aspects of sterile processing within healthcare settings. Students will gain practical, hands-on training in the decontamination, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of medical equipment, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. Through supervised externship placements in healthcare facilities, participants will develop proficiency in infection control practices, inventory management, and equipment maintenance, equipping them with the necessary skills to contribute to the seamless and safe functioning of healthcare environments. This course fosters an understanding of the crucial role of sterile processing in safeguarding patient health and promoting efficient healthcare delivery.

This course is designed to provide a comprehensive introduction into the field of sterile processing with insight and overview of the Central Service (CS) department and its technicians. Major subjects covered include introduction to the Central Service sterile processing department, regulations and standards, the role of CS in ancillary departments, and success through communication. Related medical/surgical terminology is integrated throughout the course.

This course presents students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in a sterile processing work environment. Students will build confidence, skill and competence in the field while honing the skills learned in the classroom.
